Pidilite CEO Chandramouli Venkatesan passes away

An industry veteran, Venkatesan worked with brands like Mondelez International, Onida and Asian Paints. Chandramouli Venkatesan, chief executive officer, special projects at  Pidilite Industries  Ltd., passed away on October 6 after battling with pancreatic cancer at the age of 54. Venkatesan who held the role since February 2017 was also the author of books like ‘Catalyst’ and ‘Get Better at Getting Better.’ Prior to Pidilite Industries, Venkatesan was associated with Mondelez International as the managing director and as executive director – chocolates and biscuits India, regional chocolate lead, Asia Pacific. He was in the company for more than three years. At Cadbury India where his stint was for over seven years, he held various positions. He was executive director – Chocolates, Biscuits India and strategy South Asia Indo China. Prior to that he was the director, HR and strategy as well as director – strategy, International business and Innovation. He was also VP sales and marketing at Onida and head of marketing at  Asian Paints . Venkatesan did his PGDBM in Marketing and Finance from XLRI Jamshedpur and a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai. He worked in the industry for a period spanning over 24 years. His first book ‘Catalyst’ which was published in Feb 2018 is a bestseller. It won the Crossword award on best book on Business and Management and the  Amazon  award for the most popular book in non-fiction for 2018. His second book ‘Get Better at Getting Better’ was published in Jan 2019. This book was a nominee for the best business and management book for Crossword awards in 2019. These books are on a topic which is about helping people succeed.

An alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur, Bijou Kurien has been associated with the growth of Indian retail for over 35 years. The Board of Directors of Retailers Association of India (RAI), at its meeting on 30 September 2020, appointed Bijou Kurien, Independent Consultant and Member - Strategic Advisory Board, L Catterton Asia (a part of the LVMH Group)  as the Chairman and Kulin Lalbhai , ED, Arvind Ltd. as the Vice Chairman of RAI. Over the 15 years since inception, B S Nagesh had lead RAI as the founding chairman. He has been instrumental in bringing all modern retailers in India together to mutually benefit and grow the industry. In his role as the Chairman, he helped lay the foundation for an integrated cohesive industry that sticks together through thick and thin. Speaking about the new appointments BS Nagesh said,  “We have decided to hand over the reins of RAI to new hands.  This combination of Bijou as the Chairman, Kulin as the Vice Chairman and Kumar Rajagopalan as the CEO will add tremendously to the work already been done in the industry during COVID-19 times. With Kulin joining, we get a young leader with omni experience who represents the second generation of businesses.” An alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur, Mr. Bijou Kurien has been associated with the growth of Indian retail for over 35 years. After earning his spurs at Hindustan Unilever Ltd., he joined the founding team at Titan Industries, where he helped build powerful brands in the Watch and Jewellery Industry like Titan, Fastrack, Sonata, Tanishq etc.. He helped create India’s largest exclusive brand retail chain. During his stint with Reliance Retail, he was at the forefront of one of the most ambitious retail ventures ever which dramatically transformed the Indian retail landscape. Currently, he is an independent consultant and member of the Strategic Advisory Board of L Catterton Asia (a part of the LVMH Group). An Independent Director on several listed and unlisted companies, he advises select consumer product companies and mentors a few start-ups. Mr. Kulin Lalbhai is the Director at Arvind Fashions and Executive Director at Arvind Limited, where he drives new initiatives at the consumer businesses of the group. He has been instrumental in setting up several new retail concepts and also spearheads the group’s digital initiatives. He also plays an active role in the overall Corporate Strategy. Kulin holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School, and a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the Stanford University. Prior to his current role, he has also worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Co.

XLRI Jamshedpur to mentor India’s First ‘Robotics Technology Park’
   

Jamshedpur, Sept. 25:  In order to give thrust to ‘Digital India’, ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives of Govt. of India, the first ‘Robotics Technology Park’ of India is getting setup at Greater Noida, NCR Delhi under a special ‘MoU’ done with state Govt. of U.P., where research firm ‘Innogress’ is promoter of this project. Recently Innogress has invited top most B-School of India XLRI, Jamshedpur to mentor its ‘Greater Noida Robotics Technology Park’ (GNRTP) project, which is going to be first ‘AI’ (Artificial Intelligence) and Robotics Technology focused Tech. Park in India and South East Asia. While accepting Mentorship and Advisory Board invitation for ‘Greater Noida Robotics Technology Park’, Dean (Academics) and Professor Information Systems of XLRI, Jamshedpur, Dr. Ashis K. New Delhi:   Two Indian Business schools, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore and  XLRI - Xavier School of Management, have been featured in the first edition of Positive Impact Rating 2020, launched today at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The two Indian Business schools have been listed along with top management institutes in the likes of London Business School (UK), Esade Business School (Spain), Eada Business School Barcelona (Spain) and Edhec Business School (France). IIM Bangalore  has been featured in the level 4 (Transforming schools) while XLRI found its place in level 3 (Progressing schools) of the rating. XLRI- Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur have been ranked among top thirty global business schools in the first edition of Positive Impact Rating (PIR) 2020. The rating was released today at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The rating is done by students and for students. An official release from PIR said it is the first time that students around the world assessed their business schools on how they perceive their positive impact in the world. The two Indian schools have featured alongside other premier management institutions in US, Canada and Europe. "The purpose of this PIR 2020 is to measure how business schools contribute to solving societal challenges by energizing the school and its culture, by educating current and future leaders, by providing relevant research results and offers for continuing education, by participating in the public debate and by being a role model institution," XLRI, Xavier School of Management said in a release. Under the rating process the impact of business schools is measured in three areas (energizing, educating, and engaging) which are further divided into seven other dimensions. These dimensions include assessing the programs offered and the learning methods used, and how students actively engage. It assesses a school’s culture and governance, which are predictors for becoming a positive impact school. Fr. P. Mr Amol Titus who is a senior strategic advisor, educationist and writer based in Jakarta, has conducted a variety of education focused youth development programs at over 40 Universities and Institutes in the past 10 years. Gates Foundation appoints Hari Menon as Country Director for India

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has appointed Hari Menon as the Country Director for India Menon takes over from Nachiket Mor, who held the position for the past three years and resigned last month to return to his prior work as a donor and investor in India's development sector, the foundation said in a statement. In his new role, Menon will oversee the foundation's priorities in India to improve conditions of family health, sanitation, digital financial inclusion, agriculture, and gender equality, it added.  "India has made tremendous progress on expanding access to health coverage, good nutrition, safe sanitation, digital financial services, agricultural productivity, and women's economic empowerment.  "We look forward to supporting these initiatives through our technical and global expertise, to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to lead a healthy and productive life," Menon said.  Currently, Menon is Director, Global Program Advocacy & Communications, based out of the foundation's headquarters in Seattle. Anand Nayak Appointed as an Additional Director in the Board of ITC Limited

The Board of Directors of ITC Ltd appointed Anand Nayak as Additional Directors also as Independent Directors of the Company   Mr. Anand Nayak is a Post Graduate in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from XLRI, Jamshedpur from where he graduated in 1973. He joined ITC Limited in the same year and served the Company for more than 42 years until his retirement in December 2015.  During his long tenure with lTC, he held various portfolios and worked across several businesses as well as at Corporate Headquarters where he headed the Human Resources Function from 1996 to 2015. He also served on the Corporate Management Committee of ITC for over 18 years from 1997 to 2015.

Manoj will focus on ensuring that dunnhumby India operates successfully as a key strategic location for dunnhumby and its clients.  Prior to this, Manoj spent three years in London as the Managing Director for InsightBee by Evalueserve, a Cloud-based business research platform that successfully merges skills from research team members located around the globe – which he led from concept to commercial reality.  Manoj has also served as the Global Head of Operations for Evalueserve’s Corporate and Professional Services Business Unit, responsible for global operations across five continents, overseeing a 700-person research team. Lenovo India appoints Ashok Nair as the Director for India Service Operations

Ashok Nair holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Surathkal and a post-graduation in management from XLRI, Jamshedpur. Ashok will report to Alex Fu, Executive Director of Asia Pacific services and work alongside Rahul Agarwal, Managing Director & CEO-Lenovo India. He will be responsible for leading the growth strategy to make Lenovo, India the “Best in class” within the IT service industry. Ashok will focus on driving sustainable, profitable means across multiple routes-to-market and on making Lenovo services a key differentiator in the market. He has a large breadth of experience in sales and marketing across industries such as Consumer products, IT, Telecom and Internet. Ashok comes with over two decades of experience in increasing brand and presence for consumer-focused businesses in India and South Asia, across IT businesses like Intel as well as new-age businesses in educational technology. His previous stint was with Math Adventures where he was responsible for leading New Business initiatives, organic and inorganic, which entailed extensive channel sales management, incubating the start-up business, and leading the innovation strategy. In his previous innings at Lenovo, he started as Director of Sales for India and Sri Lanka region, setting up a sustainable channel infrastructure for the PC business and closed his stint as the Director of SMB, delivering P&L objectives and growing volumes of sales across all business units.

Nagarajan Ramamoorthy Assumes charge as the first full time director of  IIM Amritsar:

Professor Nagarajan Ramamoorthy has assumed charge as the first full time director at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Amritsar. In his earlier stints, he has worked with the Indian Airlines, Brakes India Limited of TVS group and Voltas Limited of Tata group. He has even taught at University of Maryland, Marymount University, and University of Houston-Victoria, according to a release shared by the institute.  He received his PG- Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from XLRI, Jamshedpur and Ph.D in business and management from the Robert H. Smith School of Business., University of Maryland, USA.  He has extensive international experience which include two Fulbright teaching and research scholarships to Bulgaria (University of National and World Economy, Sofia) & Latvia (University of Applied Sciences, Valmiera), Inter-Country exchange scholarship to Austria (University of Applied Sciences, St. Polten), among others. He has served on the Peer Review team for Fulbright council for three years in the USA. He has been on the editorial boards of several leading international journals.

At the company’s board meeting he has been inducted as an Additional Director and MD & CEO - Designate.Bimlendra Jha joins Ambuja Cement from Tata Steel Ltd. where he has spent nearly three decades of his career. Over the past six years, he has held multiple leadership roles including Executive Chairman Long Products Europe, Executive Director on the Board of Tata Steel Europe and CEO Tata Steel UK. He will look after operations in UK, Sweden, and Canada. He is a B. Tech in Ceramic Engineering from IIT Varanasi and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management, Marketing and Finance from XLRI Jamshedpur.

ITC Ltd has elevated 46-year old Amitav Mukherji as head of corporate human resources, continuing with its trend of appointing younger executives in leadership roles. Mukherji is succeeding R Sridhar who superannuated earlier this month. An ITC spokesperson confirmed the appointment. A lifer at the cigarette-to-biscuits company, Mukherji is an economics graduate and holds management degrees from XLRI , Jamshedpur , and Cornell University . He has cross-functional experience such as sales and brand management, and was head of HR of the foods business in his last role. He is also actively involved in designing and teaching at learning and development programmes at the corporate level.

London-based banking giant Barclays on Monday appointed Sandeep Das as Head  –  India in private bank & overseas services

London-based banking giant Barclays on Monday appointed Sandeep Das as head of private clients – India in private bank & overseas services, with effect from February 11, 2019.  Das has over 27 years of experience in private banking and in his previous role, he was the managing director of Standard Chartered Private Bank in India.  Karen Frank, chief executive officer, private banking and overseas services, Barclays said, “Sandeep’s extensive experience will support our strategy and capitalise on the strengths and resources of the Barclays brand and global business.  His track record in private banking in India will enable us to expand and deepen our client relationships to deliver solutions from across Barclays International."  He started his banking career with ANZ Grindlays in 1991 and had held diverse roles across products, distribution and segments in his 27 years of his career.  Das graduated in Economics from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi in 1989 and followed by MBA from Xavier School of Management (XLRI) in 1991.

Zalora, one of Asia's largest One Fashion Destination, has appointed Gunjan Soni as its CEO. Soni would be joining the firm by early 2019. A seasoned professional, Soni was one of the youngest partners at McKinsey India and was later Executive VP, Strategy at Star India, eventually launching Hotstar. Soni then moved to Flipkart, foreseeing the growth of fashion in India and revived Myntra and Jabong successfully. Gunjan is a 2001-03 alumnus of XLRI Jamshedpur, and one of the  rising women leaders of XL. 

HDFC Bank  has appointed Mr Vijay Razdan as the Chief Human Resources Officer

Pope reappoints Guilherme Vaz (80PMIR)  as Member Of Vatican’s Laity Council

Pope Francis has reappointed  Mr. Guilherme Vaz (80PMIR), on the reconstituted and enlarged Vatican Pontifical Council for the Laity. The appointment of the Mr Guilherme Vaz, was announced on October 6th. For 10 years Vaz was member of the erstwhile, Pontifical Council first appointed by Pope Benedict XVI and continued under Pope Francis. In recognition for his exemplary service to the Universal Church and the International community, Mr Vaz was conferred with the Papal Honour of Knight of the order of St Gregory the Great in 2016. Mr Vaz worked for 23 years, in the TATA group, before taking up the present assignment.  Mr Vaz is also a member of the Bombay Archdiocesan Board of Education and an adviser to the Archbishop of Bombay on Educational matters. Misri is a career diplomat from the 1989 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, and has served in various capacities at the Headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, New Delhi, in the Prime Minister's Office in New Delhi and in various Indian Missions abroad in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America.
